The OFFICIAL FAQs
Have questions?  Well, we've got answers.  (We hope.)

Is this like National Novel Writing Month?
Yes, except for our 'clubs' and we're much more lenient.

Are the novels going to be verified or are we going on an honor system?
They will be verified. At the end of the month you will email a text document to your club president as an attachment along with your username.

But then won't you be able to read my story?
We won't. But, we're all writers too, and we understand how that might worry you. When you get to the end of the month and you're ready to verify, make a copy of the file, and then change all of the letters to a, or scramble them all using the search and replace functions in your word processor.

*Note: It's been brought to our attention that some people have found their stories to be 6-700 words under the original count after scrambling. We're looking into what causes this. If you have time, you may want to write a few hundred words over your goal just in case.

Is there going to be a 'Winners' List?
Winners can be updated by the Club President on the Club pages.

Are there going to be award icons?
Yes.

Can we work on more than one novel?
Yes. Your total word count can, and most likely will, consist of several novels and short stories

What exactly is allowed?
New words in novels and short stories in all fiction genres, including fanfiction. Nonfiction, poems, lyrics, etc... don't count (unless you work them into your story). ;) If you continue a Work in Progress, the words you've written before January 1st DO NOT COUNT.

Can I co-write my novel with someone?
No.

Can I start early/work on a work-in-progress?
Yes, but all words written before January 1st don't count.

I'm participating in another writing group. Can the novel/short story I write for that be part of my word count?
Yes. (Unless the director of that group has objections, of course.)

I just went to the forums and they did something really weird!
Email us at admins@nanowriye.com and we can try and fix it.

Are there going to be progress bars?
We are working on it, but at this point in time, we are unsure. However, while we're not providing progress bars, you can use this: http://www.feath.com/AFB/meter.php
Note: It does not update itself, it's just a meter graphic you can put on your site or in your post.

When do sign-ups begin and end?
Sign-ups for the clubs will begin on December 10th. Sign-ups do not end during the year, since the yearly goal is what determines a winner. EDIT: Sign-ups will remain open for another few months.

When do sessions end?
Your writing for the month must be sent to the club president no later than 11:59 pm on the 30th or 31st of each month. Your total writing for the year must be emailed to the NaNoWriYe admins no later than 11:59 PM on December 31st, 2006.

I can't stay logged into the forums/I can't log out of the forums.
Try deleting your cookies. Then log back in. If that doesn't work, drop us an email at admins@nanowriye.com.

So, where do I sign up?
Register at the forums. On December 10th, email your club preference to admins@nanowriye.com

Wait, you didn't answer my question!
Drop us a line at: admins@nanowriye.com, or feel free to ask in on the forums. You can also IM the admins:

I have a couple of questions.

1) When we go to submit the word count, do we HAVE to scramble the text of the story, or can we just leave it as it is? It sounds a lot more complicated than needed to me as it is, but I've also never tried this/NaNoWriMo.

2) If you're not really sure what you want your goal to be, having never tried something like this before, should we generally pick the first or second club to join?

3) Do you know of any other places- web sites/message boards- for stuff like this that aren't JUST in December, November, and April (there are three that do them in those months that I know of)? If so, could you perhaps make a list of links to them for future reference?

Thanks.

No, you don't have to scramble. Some people are very protective of their novels, and are afraid "people" will read them. It's up to you.

2) If you're not really sure what you want your goal to be, having never tried something like this before, should we generally pick the first or second club to join?

Did you win Nano? If you won Nano, and you think that you could write that much or more, considering that NaNo counts towards the WriYe total, I'd say shoot for a higher number. If you are unsure, stick with the 100K or the 250k. It's a nice, safe number.

3) Do you know of any other places- web sites/message boards- for stuff like this that aren't JUST in December, November, and April (there are three that do them in those months that I know of)? If so, could you perhaps make a list of links to them for future reference?

I'll get right on that. That is a fantastic idea. There is an entire forum for this kind of thing on the boards.

No, I didn't win NaNo. I decided not to try it this year, and I started to regret it. I found this and thought it might be cool to try this and help get prepared for NaNo next year. I also don't really know what the term 10k (or whatever) means verses say...145,000 words. I usually go by numbers. I've been doing my own word counts, and at my community [info]creativefantasy (which you're more than welcome to add to the resources since we do do a smaller version of NaNo), but I've never done something to the extent of the real NaNo.

Glad you liked the idea of making the list of resources. :)

10k= 10,000 words. (k=1,000)

I'll get that resource list up and running as soon as possible.

RPG related writing?

So if you do a lot of writing for a role-playing game, since you are in effect writing a story, would the part that you write (intros and such) be counted as part of your word count?

This is just me being nitpicky, but why can't we co-write? I've got a lovely story that I'd like to do, but I don't think I have enough insight into one of the characters, which a friend seems to know all about. I know it's all similar to the WriMo rules, but since you aren't sticking to the set-amount-per-month thing, why stay with this?

What about...

Children's books? My children's books are rhymed and metered - they would read like poetry, but are specifically targeted for children (think Seuss-style). Do they count as written words for NaNoWriYe?

Um... is the registration for this year's Nanowriye open? My friends and I have sent emails to the email addresses mentioned, but there's been no response.

Help?
